Coal-Fired Portfolio Still A Good Bet

The future promise of green and renewable energy is certainly great. Finding these cleaner and carbon neutral sources of fuel could be one of the better longer term investment themes. In the short to medium term, fossil fuels will continue to show their dominance. While natural gas is finding new prominence in various nations' energy plans, the worldwide demand for coal is going strong. In addition, recent developments across the sector have created some opportunities for investors to add exposure to this fuel source. Potash Profits Growing Like A Weed

Thanks to continued tailwinds from strong crop prices and favorable farmer economics, PotashCorp (NYSE:POT), the world's largest fertilizer company, reported another strong quarter. Potash reported record first-quarter earnings of $732 million or $0.84 per share, a 71% increase over EPS of $0.49 earned in the same period last year. The company generated revenues of $2.2 billion during quarter compared with $1.7 billion a year ago. Continued strong demand and higher fertilizer prices helped PotashCorp record gross margin of $1.1 billion, well above the $729 million in the year ago quarter.
